An urban garden for abandoned teens
Casa Alianza Mexico
Mexico City, Mexico
THE ORGANIZATION
Casa Alianza is a non-profit organization in Mexico City that provides shelter, food, immediate crisis care, and other services to homeless and runaway youth. With over 35 years of experience, they support children and teenagers aged 12 to 18 who have suffered social abandonment, including human trafficking, violence, sexual exploitation, and addiction. Casa Alianza is committed to sustainably protecting and caring for these young individuals, empowering them to become self-sufficient and thrive in society.
The project
An urban garden was constructed from start to finish at Casa Alianza to provide children and teenagers with a space to actively participate in growing and caring for plants, connect with nature, and feel a sense of belonging. Now, the garden produces a variety of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, broccoli, and arugula, which the teens continue to nurture.
Laura Teuffer, the Alliances Executive at Casa Alianza, says, βThe new garden will definitely contribute to the life plan of each child and adolescent, particularly in strengthening the structure and values such as the care of a living being which in the long run can translate into self-care.β
